Melbourne’s ‘’60s music specialists, The Substitutes, are proud to present ‘The Giants of ’60s Australian Rock Show’. The show features a dazzling array of period music from some of Australia’s most iconic bands: ‘The Easybeats’, ‘The Masters Apprentices’ & ‘The Loved Ones’. Featuring special guest vocalists RONNIE CHARLES (ex The Groop), STEVE LUCAS (X) and DAN ROBINSON (ex Wild Cherries).

The Substitutes, Melbourne’s specialist ‘60s band, has brought together the music of three of Australia’s most influential and original bands in one exciting package.

The Easybeats were migrants who met at Villawood in Sydney in late 1964 and attained international success during a fantastic five year career that spawned a dozen top ten singles. The impish face and stage antics of little Stevie Wright made them the Australian equivalent of The Beatles. We will celebrate the enormous contribution of Stevie’s vocals and the band’s song writing talents on Australian music.

The Masters Apprentices started their career in 1965 in Adelaide with a completely original song  called ‘Undecided’ and quirky originality became their trademark. Jim Keays was an electrifying lead singer and Doug Ford as good a guitarist as any of his international contemporaries. We will present both the light and the shade from the Masters repertoire.

And finally, Melbourne’s most original band sprang to life in 1965 with the release of the eponymously titled “The Loved One”. The band featuring quite possibly the most astonishing Australian vocalist of the ‘60s, Gerry Humphrys, and we are delighted to present a clutch of their complex but infectious songs.

With Special Guests

  • RONNIE CHARLES, who will pay homage to The Loved Ones but will also sing three of The Groop’s biggest hits;
  • STEVE LUCAS, who has had a love affair with The Easybeats and Masters Apprentices since his legendary band X first covered some of their songs in the punk era;
  • DAN ROBINSON, who was a vibrant member of Lobby Loyde’s Wild Cherries and will cover the songs of many of the bands he knew in the ‘60s.

All in all this will be a unique opportunity to celebrate the lives and music of three wildly different, but now departed, vocalists: Stevie Wright, Jim Keays and Gerry Humphrys.

The band comprises Neil Scott (ex Chalice, Captain Spalding) doing vocals and guitar, Peter Robinson (Go Show musical director, vocalist/bassist and founder of The Strangers), Peter Reed (ex New Dream, Phil Manning and Mark Gillespie bands) playing drums, and Peter Summers (ex Strange Idols) on vocals, guitar and keyboard.
